Black walnut husks are covered in water and simmered for a few hours

The husks are strained out and the liquid is brought back to a simmer for a while longer.

A small batch of the liquid is removed for testing. A small amount of isopropyl alcohol is added as a preservative (this also dilutes the intensity slightly).

The walnut ink can be simmered to reduce further if a darker ink is desired.
